My husband and I will be in Salta from the morning of September 26 to morning of October 1. We have a few possible itineraries, but are hoping to spend at least one night in Cafayate and also see Humahuaca and the Salt Flats. I'm wondering the best way to do this; I've heard renting a car is the best option but I'm a bit nervous due to issues on past trips flat tires, etc. I'd feel more comfortable with a driver, but I'm unsure of cost though we'd take any recommendations!
We'd also consider tours and buses, but those aren't ideal. Any thoughts? If it helps, I've included two of our possible itineraries below. We have done a couple of roadtrips around the NW from Salta. I have no idea how much a driver guide might cost but you could try sending a pm to Angie who posts here as Gienna who is a guide.
We did both trips in small cars rented from Hertz and really enjoyed the experience. The driving was fun and we experienced no problems with the cars. Do be careful who you rent from and do check the cars thoroughly before accepting them esp. Take it for a short test drive before heading off. If possible go for a zero excess CDW or have insurance of your own in place. The second time our Spanish was much better and it really did enhance our trip so it is worth learning a few of the basics beforehand.
Our first trip covered all of the places you mentioned plus chicoana and San Antonio and took around ten days. The second was much shorter at around 4 days and we just drove from Salta to Cachi to Molinos to Cafayate and back to Salta.
A nice circuit with great scenery but avoided te need to return to Salta. Your proposal sounds fine to me although I would check that your route would cover Parque de Los Cardones and Quebrada de las Flechas as the scenery is incredible. Well, of course, having a driver let you, and your partner, to enjoy the place without worries. If I had to rent a driver I would maximize my time by doing, for instance Day 2; Cafayate visiting wineries and cheese tasting in a goat farm Day 3; Salta - Purmamarca - Visiting the salt flats at sunset.
